When we have talked about AAMFT events in the past, key considerations have been how we can meet members’ needs, advance our profession, and continue to build community within our association. We’ve also considered the element of where we can go to maximize our impact with MFTs and those interested in systemic training.
Historically, the where was typically a series of domestic locations selected based upon target populations within a reasonable driving distance, ease of travel to the location, weather, and location points of interest. Unfortunately, the cost of these in-person events, particularly in desirable locations, continued to rise exponentially. Annually, AAMFT lost money on its conference, an event attended by around 6% of the membership each year. The AAMFT Board of Directors determined that this expense, benefiting so few of the membership, could no longer continue with the event in its current form.
The answer for our signature event was a shift in format and concept – and thus was born the Systemic Family Therapy Conference (SFTC). While still offering a wealth of systemic knowledge around a wide range of clinical focuses, the SFTC would only occur in person every three years starting in 2021. Rather than being solely an association event, AAMFT would become the primary sponsor with a future hope of sharing that role with other systemically oriented groups to truly unite our community, increase participation, and offset some of the expenses.
The new event was designed to launch live in Denver during fall 2021, however, the COVID-19 pandemic had other plans. The good news is that a second year of pivoting to a virtual event provided some important takeaways. While Zoom fatigue is real, the opportunity for gathering together with a large number of MFTs for clinical training and dialogue is still extremely popular online. With over twice as many attendees as our in-person event, joining from every continent on the globe except Antarctica, and at every level and aspect of the profession, there’s no denying the need for our MFTs to have space to come together to connect— and doing so in a virtual format addresses many of the concerns of our previous annual event that made it untenable to continue.
These realizations led us to connect with members and other professional associations to examine what else we have learned and has emerged because of the pandemic, and to reimagine how our events can shift to meet those needs for every person interested in systemic, relational therapy.
So, what can members expect moving forward with our events?
