A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Beginning Anew in 2023

I am filled with gratitude as I welcome 2023 as the new, incoming President of AAMFT: we have a new, incoming CEO, Christine Michaels; a new group of Board members; some ongoing challenges which we are newly poised to tackle, and opportunities that await us as we are in as strong a fiscal and strategic position than we’ve ever been.

Thanks to the continued engagement and support from all of you, we have not only survived but thrived during the SARS COVID-19 pandemic. The past nearly three years have seen a rapid development of online AAMFT programming and educational offerings; Family TEAM’s seizing of strategic opportunities to win inclusion of MFTs in Medicare by Congress and other federal and state initiatives; the development of new Topical Interest Networks; the initiation and completion of AAMFT’s first ever Work Force Study; and an increasing, vibrant and diverse membership, particularly amongst students.

Yes, we have “practiced what we preach” as systemic thinkers and healers in leading the Association swiftly and adeptly through the serious and consequential contextual challenges of the past three years, and now as President and on behalf of the AAMFT Board of Directors, we welcome a new era.

It will be my honor and challenge to pick up the baton from my esteemed predecessors and continue to build on the gains that have been made through bold and decisive leadership over the past decade.

My vision for this new era includes the ongoing integration of AAMFT’s robust DEI Policy throughout all of its governance units and programs; the strengthening of AAMFT’s leadership pipeline in order to ensure a robust future of skilled and enthusiastic Association leaders; the evolving application of the AAMFT Work Force Study data to allow informed decisions for the allocation of funds for programs and initiatives vital for MFT practitioners and growth of the profession; and last but not least, a planned initiative to explore MFT license portability. These are just a few of the many important areas that I as incoming President, along with the Board of Directors and skilled and dedicated staff, will be focused on.

AAMFT’s subsidiary organization, The AAMFT Research and Education Foundation, has also seen a period of revitalization with a slew of research projects in addition to its anchor program, the Minority Fellowship Program (MFP). Many more exciting plans are underway for the further growth and rebranding of the Foundation—AAMFT protects the profession—the Foundation is what will promote it into the future—stay tuned and please give generously whenever possible!

In closing, as we direct our new year energies and ambitions to all the above, I also want to express a word of caution, or pause, and for us to consider the following. As the smallest of the five mental health core disciplines, but the only national professional Association representing our field throughout the globe, we work harder and to do all we do in order to compete, let alone thrive, as MFTs into the future. We will have to carefully evaluate our priorities and resources in order to fulfill our highest mandate to protect the license and profession. We will have to work more closely and collaboratively with our like-minded, vital MFT credentialing and regulatory organizations to join forces in strengthening the profession to remain a necessary core provider in mental healthcare. We have come too far to allow our distinctive, relational/systemic foundation about well-being and treatment to be assimilated by other licenses or professions as a sub-specialty.

I say the above because although I started this article with optimism about how strong we are as an Association, I am not naïve about our socio-political-economic landscape and the fact that the US and world have seen a rise in the need for mental healthcare. We cannot be passive while the forces of expediency around us allow shifts away from our profession to the larger disciplines to fulfill this increased need for providers. This is a pivotal point in time to further entrench the MFT profession. As President of AAMFT, I will hold the helm steady as we navigate through this tumultuous time of transition and opportunity.

I look forward to being your President for the next two years, welcome President-Elect Adrian Blow to lead the Board of Directors by my side, and am grateful to Past-President Shelley Hanson’s steady and masterful leadership during these past two years in the midst of the pandemic. And thank you all for your continued energy into our beloved profession, and membership and support of AAMFT!

Systemic Supervision

Systemic thinking is understanding and exploring the intricacies of an individual and bearing in mind how we impact each other through our interactions and behaviors. Applying this to therapy and supervision can be seen through acknowledging differences in belief systems, attitudes, and approaches to life.
