SURRENDER

She left me, but still she remains
Trapped in portals of time analogizing when picture frames became strange
Between what is and what was

Subtraction of clarity multiplied by the increase of fuzz
Equals silence and sometimes shame, sometimes agitation, and sometimes blame

“Mom, do you remember Alice? You said it was your favorite dog.”
Her failed attempt of remembering presented only a dark fog
Eyes clenched so tightly, her fist angrily hitting desk
“I can’t remember!” she shouts, as she beats up on her chest
Alice is long gone now, and has been replaced by a new PET

Signs of time indicating warning ahead
Forced to take an unwanted detour where traffic is slow in which one dreads

She left me, but still she remains
Trapped in portals of time analogizing when picture frames became strange
Between what is and what was

The morning comes and the sun softly rests upon her face
“Good morning, Beautiful!” she says
Her hand touches my shoulder, squeezing softly, a warm embrace
“Mom?” “Yes, Beautiful.”; she replies, “You know its me.”
The tears that fell from my eyes, could fill countless seas

Beautiful is what she called me when I was a little girl
When the world seemed as easy as twisting my little curls
“Where’s Mister?”; she asks, that’s what she called my dad
“He’s not here right now.”; I say, feeling simultaneously, happy and sad
For dad had passed a few years before
Oh what love they shared. So much love to be adored

She taught me to be a fighter and to go after what I see
But, how can one go back and fight against the disappearance of memories
So, I throw in the towel of attempting to comprehend or understand and
I choose to rest my head on her thigh and place my arms around her waist, not making haste
But accepting her for who she is today, surrendering only to love

She left me, but still she remains
Trapped in portals of time analogizing when picture frames became strange
Between what is and what was

2024 Student Ethics Competition Essay – 1st Place

Both the AAMFT Code of Ethics (2015) Standard 1.9: Relationship Beneficial to Client and the ethical principle of beneficence require therapists to continue to provide services only so long as clients are benefiting from the therapeutic relationship (Murphy & Hecker, 2017). When practitioners are emotionally depleted and under elevated levels of stress, there is an increased risk for ethical violations (Barton, 2020; Murphy & Hecker, 2017).
